Book Review: Don’t Believe Her by Ms. Sanders

You ever find yourself utterly entranced by an author, the kind where their mere name on the cover promises an exhilarating ride? Ms. Sanders has become one of my go-to popcorn thriller authors, and I was bubbling with anticipation when I dived into Don’t Believe Her. This clever tale of deception and obsession had me questioning everything—loved ones, loyalty, and even my own sanity.

At the heart of the story is Ellie, who shares a tangled past with her childhood friend, Carla. Twelve years ago, Ellie received a frantic call from a sobbing Carla, imploring her to leave their hometown. Reluctantly, Ellie stayed behind, and as the years unfolded, Carla vanished without a trace. Fast forward to the present: Ellie is now engaged to Carla’s older brother, Nick, and just when life seems stable, a knock on the door unveils a shocking surprise—Carla has returned! But wait, is it really her?

Ms. Sanders masterfully pulls the reader into a whirlwind of suspense and ambiguity. Throughout the narrative, I found myself oscillating between believing Ellie’s instincts and doubting her sanity. It’s a tricky game; I frequently questioned if Ellie was just a paranoid nutjob or a fierce protector unveiling a sinister scam. This tension kept me glued to the pages, even as I shouted at the book, wishing I could knock some sense into the cast of characters. They were, to put it kindly, utterly exasperating! Littered with one-dimensional personalities and lacking any real growth, they made for a frustratingly entertaining read. I almost wished for a "what would I do in this situation" playbook, especially when my eyerolls became a workout.

The pacing of Don’t Believe Her is another one of its strengths. It thrums with a delicious tempo that drags you through each twist and turn effortlessly. The twists are tantalizing, keeping that popcorn popping while I wrestled with concepts of trust and betrayal. Yet, the ending—oh, the ending!—required a suspension of disbelief that, frankly, I just couldn’t muster. It veered into batshit absurdity, and I found myself itching with annoyance, wishing for a more satisfying wrap-up.

Despite my grumbles about certain characters and that lofty conclusion, I must admit that Ms. Sanders has a knack for weaving cheeky surprises that engage and entertain. Her writing has a unique charm, compelling enough that I’m willing to overlook some of its absurdities.

In conclusion, if you enjoy thrillers that challenge the lines of reality and love a swift-paced story that keeps you guessing (even if it may drive you a little bonkers), then Don’t Believe Her is for you. Packed with twists, it’s a wild ride that amplifies the pulse and sparks debate over what’s real and what’s facade. This book may not have reached the heights I hoped for, but I will gladly follow Ms. Sanders on whatever crazy adventure she concocts next—earnestly awaiting her next literary mindgame.

All in all, it’s a solid 3.5 stars from me, and I’m eager to see what’s next on Ms. Sanders’s agenda!
