Look Closer: A Thriller that Sparks Joy and Intrigue
There are books that simply catch your eye and then there are books that practically call out to you, demanding immediate attention. "Look Closer" by David Ellis is undoubtedly in the latter camp, and I cannot thank NetGalley and Putnam enough for providing me an ARC of this thrilling masterpiece! With its dynamic twists and clever wordplay, I found myself breathlessly diving into a world full of secrets and lies. If this book were a Black Eyed Peas song, it would surely be "BOOM BOOM POW"—rich in explosive energy and rhythm!
At its center is Simon, a law professor with ambitions that reach for more than just the classroom, and Vicky, his compassionate partner working at a shelter for abused women. Their lives appear seemingly straightforward until the dark shadows of a murder bring chaos crashing in. Lauren Betancourt, a wealthy beauty, is discovered dead on Halloween night, and the community is shaken. Will Simon be the one to untangle the web of deception, or might Vicky hold the key? With a hefty trust fund of $20 million at stake, this isn’t your average whodunit.
What truly captivated me wasn’t merely the plot—it was Ellis’s masterful storytelling. His style is a symphony of short, snappy chapters and vibrant character development that keeps you rooted in the rapidly unfolding drama. Every twist revealed felt perfectly timed, and I could hardly believe this was my first encounter with Ellis’s work. His attention to detail and ability to interlace humor into a tense narrative made for delightful reading. I was constantly chuckling at Simon’s witty inner monologues and the snappy banter between characters, which provided a refreshing contrast amidst the underlying suspense.
Ellis artfully navigates the murky waters of ambition, desire, and betrayal. The juxtaposition of Simon’s love for language games with the dire stakes of a murder investigation not only kept me grinning but also heightened my engagement with the narrative. The intimate scenes, while spicy, didn’t detract but rather enhanced the emotional stakes, making every revelation land with impact.
I’ve read many thrillers, but seldom have I found one where I kept sneaking in little reading moments throughout my day—whether during lunch breaks or while waiting for my coffee to brew. Clocking in at over 400 pages, "Look Closer" is a veritable feast for thriller enthusiasts, and I genuinely could see myself devouring this in one sitting, perhaps with a few snacks on hand for good measure!
With its delightful mix of laughter, tension, and scandal, this book is hands-down my favorite read of the year, and it easily earns five shining stars for its brilliance. I can’t think of a better summer read, especially after the Fourth of July festivities; it’s the perfect blend of spark and delight without fizzling out.
If you’re a fan of thrillers that keep you on your toes, packed with twists that surprise even seasoned readers, or perhaps someone who enjoys intricate character studies bathed in humor, "Look Closer" is your next must-read. My reading experience with this book was absolutely enriching, and I can’t wait to see what else David Ellis brings to the table.
So, if you’re looking for a phenomenal page-turner, dive into this one—you won’t regret it!
